8.3L Duramax L6P: Horsepower, Specs, Price & What We Know
Open this Tuner Depot article in your preferred AI assistant for a summary or follow-up questions.
The 8.3L Duramax is real, and for the 2027 model year it marks one of the biggest changes to GM heavy-duty diesel trucks in decades. Chevrolet is moving beyond the familiar 6.6L L5P and introducing the all-new 8.3L L6P Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8 with 555 horsepower and 1,230 lb-ft of torque. [1]
That headline matters whether you are shopping for a new Silverado HD or already have an L5P in the driveway. The L6P brings more displacement, more factory power and a clean-sheet heavy-duty diesel architecture. But it also starts a brand-new aftermarket learning curve, while the L5P already has years of tuning, exhaust, airflow and supporting-part development behind it.
In other words, the new engine is worth watching. It does not automatically make a well-sorted L5P obsolete.
8.3 Duramax Specs: What GM Has Confirmed
GM describes the L6P as its first all-new, in-house-designed heavy-duty diesel V8. The engine was developed around the loads that matter in an HD pickup: towing, hauling, heat management and sustained operation under load. [1]

How Much Horsepower Does the 8.3 Duramax Have?
The 8.3L Duramax produces 555 horsepower and 1,230 lb-ft of torque from the factory. Those numbers make it substantially stronger on paper than the outgoing later-model 6.6L L5P, which is rated at 470 horsepower and 975 lb-ft. [1] [3]
The jump is not small: 85 additional horsepower and 255 additional lb-ft of torque. The L6P also increases displacement by 1.7 liters, breaking the 6.6L displacement pattern that defined full-size Duramax V8 generations for years.
Is the 8.3 Duramax Real?
Yes. General Motors has officially confirmed the 8.3L Duramax. The new diesel will be offered in the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD, and GM has confirmed its 555-hp rating, 1,230 lb-ft torque output and up to 38,000 pounds of maximum available gooseneck towing when properly equipped. [1]
Before the official reveal, larger-displacement Duramax rumors circulated under names such as “Mongoose.” For owners researching specifications, parts or tuning, the production designation that matters is L6P Duramax.
What Does L6P Duramax Mean?
L6P is the GM engine/RPO designation associated with the new 8.3L Duramax diesel. Duramax owners already know the engine-code language: LB7, LLY, LBZ, LMM, LML and L5P. The 2027 heavy-duty diesel generation adds L6P. [3]
That means 8.3 Duramax, L6P Duramax, 8.3 L6P and 2027 Duramax will commonly point to the same new heavy-duty diesel platform.
8.3L L6P Duramax vs 6.6L L5P Duramax
This is where the story gets more interesting for current Duramax owners. The new L6P clearly wins the factory-spec comparison. The L5P, however, enters the comparison with something a brand-new platform cannot buy overnight: a mature aftermarket.
| Specification | 8.3L L6P Duramax | 6.6L L5P Duramax |
|---|---|---|
| Displacement | 8.3L | 6.6L |
| Horsepower | 555 hp | 470 hp |
| Torque | 1,230 lb-ft | 975 lb-ft |
| Factory advantage | +85 hp / +255 lb-ft | — |
| HD generation | New for 2027 | Outgoing diesel |
| Aftermarket maturity | Developing | Established |
That distinction matters. A current L5P owner can already choose from established tuning platforms, exhaust configurations, downpipes, airflow upgrades and supporting hardware with known vehicle-specific fitment. The L6P aftermarket has to build that ecosystem from the beginning.

Does the 8.3 Duramax Replace the L5P?
Yes. The L6P replaces the 6.6L L5P as the diesel offered in the 2027 Silverado HD generation. It is not simply a higher-output diesel positioned above the L5P. It represents the next full-size Duramax generation. [3]
Do not assume L5P parts fit the L6P
L5P tuners, exhaust systems, downpipes, EGR hardware, tuning files, electronic accessories and intake components should not automatically be treated as compatible with the new 8.3L L6P. The two engines need to be treated as separate platforms until a manufacturer or tuning provider explicitly confirms compatibility.
For current L5P owners, the flip side is important: you already own the platform those existing parts were engineered around.
How Much Does the 8.3 Duramax Cost?
Current 2027 Silverado HD pricing reporting lists the new 8.3L L6P Duramax as an $11,400 diesel-engine option. That is the diesel option price, not the price of the complete truck. [4]
Final Silverado HD pricing still depends on trim, cab, bed, drivetrain, packages, equipment, destination charges, taxes and dealer pricing. Chevrolet's public 2027 Silverado HD page currently states that MSRP information will be available separately. [2]
How Much Can the 8.3 Duramax Tow?
A properly equipped 2027 Silverado HD with the new Duramax can offer up to 38,000 pounds of maximum available gooseneck towing. GM also lists up to 20,000 pounds of conventional towing for properly equipped models. [1]
The important words are “up to” and “properly equipped.” Cab, chassis, drivetrain, axle, hitch and other configuration choices determine the actual rating of an individual truck.
What Turbo Does the 8.3 Duramax Use?
The 8.3L L6P uses a variable-geometry turbocharger, but the more interesting engineering story is what surrounds it. GM pairs the new turbo-diesel with a dual-stage air-to-water charge-cooling system, a compacted graphite iron block, a forged crankshaft and connecting rods, steel pistons and a high-flow fuel system. [1]
Those details matter because 555 horsepower is only useful in an HD truck if the engine can repeatedly manage heat and load. GM's hardware choices suggest the L6P was engineered around sustained heavy-duty use rather than a one-time peak-output number.
Why 1,230 LB-FT at Low RPM Matters
Peak torque makes the headline. Where the torque arrives helps determine how the truck feels when it is actually working.
Published L6P reporting places peak torque at approximately 1,400 rpm, compared with the L5P's 975 lb-ft peak at a higher engine speed. [3] That can matter during trailer starts, grade climbing, loaded acceleration and highway passing with weight behind the truck.
What Trucks Get the 8.3 Duramax?
The new 8.3L Duramax is being introduced across GM's heavy-duty pickup lineup, including the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD and 3500 HD and the 2027 GMC Sierra 2500 HD and 3500 HD. GM says the engine is built at its expanded DMAX facility in Brookville, Ohio. [1]
When Can You Buy an 8.3 Duramax?
Chevrolet says the updated 2027 Silverado HD is expected to be available in late 2026. The trucks shown by Chevrolet before launch are preproduction models, so equipment and final production details can still change. [2]
Once customer trucks start accumulating miles, the questions will move beyond the spec sheet: fuel economy, towing temperatures, turbo response, exhaust braking, regeneration behavior, reliability, ECM access and aftermarket support.
Can You Tune the 8.3 Duramax L6P?
Do not assume existing L5P tuning works on the L6P. The L6P is a new engine platform with new supporting electronics, so tuning providers will need to specifically develop and validate support for the new engine and vehicle systems.
An L5P EZ LYNK configuration, HP Tuners solution or existing L5P calibration should not be purchased under the assumption that it will work on an 8.3L L6P. Verified L6P support needs to be treated as its own application.
For L5P owners, tuning support already exists
This is where an existing L5P has a practical advantage today. Instead of waiting for the aftermarket to reverse-engineer a brand-new platform, L5P owners already have established tuning routes for supported model years and configurations.

Will L5P Exhaust Parts Fit the 8.3 Duramax?
Do not assume they will. GM has changed the engine architecture and supporting exhaust and aftertreatment layout. An exhaust component designed around an L5P remains an L5P-specific part until L6P compatibility is explicitly confirmed.
That same rule applies to downpipes, exhaust systems, electronic accessories, intake components and other vehicle-specific hardware.
If you already own an L5P, the exhaust aftermarket is mature
L5P owners do not have to wait for the market to figure out basic fitment. Downpipes and downstream exhaust configurations are already available for supported trucks, with fitment determined by model year, cab, bed and the rest of the vehicle setup.

Should L5P Owners Upgrade to an L6P?
If you are ordering a brand-new HD truck and want the strongest factory Duramax available, the L6P is the obvious direction. It brings 555 hp, 1,230 lb-ft, 8.3 liters of displacement and higher maximum available towing capability.
If you already own a healthy L5P, the decision is different. You are not comparing two engines on a spec sheet—you are comparing the cost of a new truck with the potential of a truck you already know.
The L5P's biggest strength in 2027 may be that its aftermarket is no longer theoretical. Tuning, exhaust, airflow parts and supporting hardware are already established, and owners can choose upgrades around the way they actually use the truck.

The 8.3 Duramax Is the Beginning of a New Aftermarket
The 555-hp number gets the headline, but the bigger story is that GM has effectively reset the full-size Duramax platform. For years, truck owners became accustomed to a 6.6L Duramax V8. Now there is an 8.3L engine, a new L6P code, a different architecture and a new starting point for aftermarket development.
The questions that come next are the ones diesel owners will care about most: How much power is left in the platform? How difficult will ECM access be? Which tuning systems will support it? How will the turbo and charge-cooling system respond to additional airflow? What will real-world reliability look like at 50,000, 100,000 and 200,000 miles?
Those answers will take time. The L6P is the platform everyone is about to start learning. The L5P is the one the aftermarket already knows.

In theory, yes, but it won’t be a direct bolt-in swap. The new 8.3L Duramax has a different setup, so you’d likely need custom engine mounts, wiring, ECM integration, and transmission upgrades. Your 2015 Allison 6-speed isn’t confirmed to work with it. It could be one heck of a build, but it would take some serious fabrication and a pretty big budget!
