Quick Read

What to Know Before Choosing a Diesel Tuner

A diesel delete tuner is the hardware or tuning platform used to reprogram the truck's ECM so it matches the emissions hardware configuration. The correct tuner depends on the truck's year, engine, ECM, and supported tuning method. A tuning device and a tune file are not always the same thing: some tuners come preloaded, while others require custom tune files.

Mini Maxx V2

Best suited to supported older Powerstroke, Cummins, and Duramax applications that can use a preloaded plug-and-play tuner.

EZ Lynk

Best suited to supported trucks that need custom, cloud-delivered tuning and remote tune updates.

OBD2 Flash Tuning Interface

Used for supported newer platforms including L5P, LM2, LZ0, LWN Duramax and 2022–2024 Ram Cummins applications.

EFI Live AutoCal V3

Best suited to supported Cummins and Duramax applications where custom tuning, data logging, and advanced setup are required.

Iron Loader V2

Designed for supported 2014–2017 Ram 1500 and Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0L EcoDiesel vehicles using a smartphone-controlled tuning workflow.

Tuner vs. Tune File

The tuner is the hardware or interface. The tune file is the calibration written to the ECM. Some platforms combine both; others require them separately.

Fastest way to choose: match the tuning platform to your exact year, make, model, engine, and ECM first. Then compare features such as preloaded vs. custom tuning, cloud delivery, SOTF, data logging, and multi-vehicle support.

Do You Need a Tuner for a DPF Delete?

Yes. A DPF delete requires compatible tuning so the ECM is calibrated for the change in emissions hardware. Removing the hardware alone does not change what the ECM expects to see from the DPF, EGR, and DEF systems. If those signals no longer match the factory calibration, the truck can set emissions-related fault codes or enter a reduced-power condition.

A delete tune does three things: it removes ECM monitoring of the deleted emissions components, it clears the associated fault codes, and it recalibrates fueling and timing to take advantage of the reduced backpressure.

Without it, you have the hardware but none of the gains. With it, your truck is properly calibrated for the new setup — lower EGTs, better throttle response, and the power numbers you actually deleted for.

What Tuner Do You Need for a DPF, EGR and DEF Delete?

The right diesel delete tuner depends first on your truck's year, engine, ECM, and the type of tuning the platform supports. There is no single tuner that works across every Cummins, Powerstroke, and Duramax application.

Older trucks may support a preloaded device such as the Mini Maxx V2, while newer platforms often use a tuning interface paired with vehicle-specific tune files. EZ Lynk and EFI Live provide custom-tuning options for supported platforms, while newer L5P, LM2, LZ0, LWN Duramax and 2022–2024 RAM applications use different tuning solutions.

Start with compatibility, not features. Match the tuner to your exact year, make, model, engine, and ECM before comparing options such as SOTF, cloud updates, data logging, or multi-vehicle support.

Mini Maxx V2 — Plug-and-Play Delete Tuner

ℹ️
Check compatibility carefully before purchasing. The Mini Maxx V2 has specific year and model limits — it does not support Duramax L5P (2017+), 2020+ Ford Powerstroke, or any GM truck built after 2016. For those platforms, EZ Lynk or the OBD2 Flash Tuning Interface is the correct choice.

Known Issues — From the Manufacturer

  • ⚠️ ALL TRUCKS — Factory EGT sensors: The Mini Maxx V2 does not work with factory pyrometer/EGT probes. Unplug all of them before installing. If you still want EGT readings, you'll need to add a separate docking station.
  • ⚠️ Throttle Position gauge: Does not work on any truck. Do not use it.
  • ⚠️ 2013–2021 RAM — Boost drops to 20 PSI: Known issue. H&S has a temporary fix (lasts 300–500 miles) for 2013–2018. No fix yet for 2019–2021. This is an unresolved issue as of the last update.
  • ⚠️ 2018+ RAM — P040D fault code: This code will show up but doesn't affect how the truck drives or how the tune works. No software fix. Immediate workaround: keep the EGR temperature sensor plugged in.
  • ⚠️ 2018+ RAM — "Part number not currently supported": If your PCM part number starts with a letter (not a number), the tuner may not flash. Try the latest firmware update first. If it still doesn't work, contact support or return it.
  • ⚠️ 2014–2015 RAM — Loping/surging at idle: Some trucks exhibit this. Update to firmware v2.0.0.4 or later. If it's still doing it after the update, unplug all EGT sensors.
  • ⚠️ 2011+ Ford 6.7L — P24C6 or P24DA codes: Caused by a calibration issue on certain PCMs. Fixed as of October 2023 — update your device firmware and the codes will clear.
  • ⚠️ 2011–2019 Ford — SOTF not working on some trucks: About 7% of 2011–2019 Ford Powerstroke trucks have a PCM software version that doesn't support SOTF power mode switching. The tune itself works fine — you just can't change power levels on the fly on those trucks.
  • ⚠️ 2016 Ford — P04E3 code: The 2016 model doesn't have a PCV sensor the tuner expects, which triggers this code. Download the fix file from the Mini Maxx website, copy the "MGGDT.IT1" file into the FORD folder on the SD card, update firmware, reinstall tune. Only do this if you're getting that specific code.
  • ⚠️ 2017–2019 Ford 6.7L — Factory EGT sensor causes boost drop: On these years, leaving the factory EGT sensor plugged in will cause the boost to drop off and the truck to feel gutless. Fix: unplug the factory EGT sensor and clear the codes. Truck will run correctly — you just won't have an EGT readout.
  • ⚠️ 2011+ LML Duramax — Cab & Chassis dual tank: If your LML C&C has dual fuel tanks, do not use this tuner. It will disable the rear tank. Boost gauge will also not work on LML. You cannot adjust tire size or change the speed limiter on LML trucks.

EZ Lynk Tune Packages — Best for Custom & Cloud-Based Tuning

The EZ Lynk AutoAgent 3 is a cloud-based tuning platform — tunes are delivered remotely via the EZ Lynk app on your phone. No handheld screen, no SD card, no cable. Your tuner communicates with the cloud, your tune gets pushed, and you're done. It also supports over-the-air updates and remote tech support.

Why EZ Lynk beats plug-and-play for performance builds: Custom tunes are built around your specific truck — injector size, turbo, fueling mods, all of it. If you're making changes beyond a basic delete, a custom tune is the only way to safely extract real power without pushing EGTs or fueling out of safe range.

Each package below includes the EZ Lynk AutoAgent 3 device plus platform-specific custom tune files for your truck.

Who it's for: Modified trucks, performance builds, and anyone on a newer platform (2017+). If you're stacking mods or want tunes updated remotely as your build evolves, EZ Lynk is the right call.

Do You Install the Tune Before or After the Delete Hardware?

The tune and hardware need to be installed in the correct sequence for the specific truck and tuning platform. Do not assume every Cummins, Powerstroke, or Duramax follows the same process.

In general, the ECM needs to be properly programmed as part of the delete installation rather than driving the truck after emissions hardware has been removed while the stock calibration is still active.

Follow the instructions supplied with your tuner and tune package. Depending on the application, the process may also require an ECM unlock, bypass cable, tune-file delivery, or another programming step before the hardware change is completed.

Understanding Diesel Tuners and Tune Files

What Is the Difference Between a Tuner and a Tune File?

The tuner is the hardware or interface used to communicate with the truck's ECM. The tune file is the calibration that gets written to the ECM. Some devices come with preloaded tuning, while others require vehicle-specific custom tune files.

Can You Use a Different Tune With Your Existing Tuner?

Sometimes, but compatibility depends on the tuning platform, device licensing, the vehicle, and how the original tune was supplied. Before buying another tune file, confirm that your existing device can accept it and that the file is built for your exact truck and calibration.

Can One Tuner Be Used on Multiple Trucks?

Multi-vehicle support varies by platform. Some devices are intended for one vehicle at a time, while others can support multiple vehicle configurations with the correct licensing or tune setup. Check the device and tune-provider requirements before assuming one tuner can be moved between trucks.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a preloaded tune and a custom tune?▼
A preloaded tune (Mini Maxx) is a one-size-fits-all file built for a stock or near-stock truck. It's fast and simple. A custom tune (EZ Lynk, EFI Live) is built around your specific truck — accounting for injector size, turbo, fueling, and any other mods. For heavily modified trucks, a custom tune is the safe and correct choice.
Which tuner is best for a 6.7 Powerstroke delete?▼
For a 2008–2019 6.7 Powerstroke, the Mini Maxx V2 is a solid plug-and-play option. For 2020–2025 trucks or modified builds, the EZ Lynk Powerstroke package is the better fit.
Which tuner works on a 6.7 Cummins?▼
For the 6.7 Cummins, Mini Maxx V2, EZ Lynk, and EFI Live cover supported year ranges. Iron Loader V2 is not a Cummins platform; it is reserved for select 2014–2017 3.0L EcoDiesel applications. Mini Maxx V2 covers 2007.5–2021 RAM. EZ Lynk Cummins package for 2010–2021 with custom tuning and ongoing support (2018+ requires a bypass cable). EFI Live AutoCal V3 for 2006–2021 for professional/shop use.
Is the all-in-one delete kit worth it vs buying parts separately?▼
Yes — especially on the first build. The all-in-one kit removes the compatibility guesswork, saves time sourcing individual parts, and usually comes out cheaper than buying everything separately. When you buy a complete all-in-one kit from Tuner Depot, you save 5% off the individual component prices before any site discounts — so you're already ahead before any sale pricing kicks in. If you're doing a full EGR + DPF + DEF delete, it's the right way to go.
How much HP can I gain from a diesel delete tune?▼
On a stock truck, a delete tune with supporting hardware typically adds 50–100 HP depending on the platform. The Mini Maxx V2 claims up to 250 HP potential on supported trucks. Custom tunes via EZ Lynk or EFI Live can push further, especially on modified builds with larger injectors and upgraded turbos.
What tuner works on a 2017+ L5P Duramax?▼
For the L5P Duramax (2017+), you need the OBD2 Flash Tuning Interface — it's already included in our all-in-one delete kits for L5P trucks, so you don't need to source it separately when buying the complete kit. The L5P can also be tuned with the EZ Lynk Duramax Tune Package. The Mini Maxx V2 and EFI Live AutoCal V3 do not support the L5P. For a fully custom build, use the Build a Kit tool (in the header on desktop, or the sticky footer on mobile) — enter your year, make, and model and it filters the catalog down to only the tuners, tunes, and parts verified to fit your truck.
What is EFI Live best used for?▼
EFI Live AutoCal V3 is the professional shop tool. It supports multiple vehicle configurations, high-speed data logging, and full custom tune capability. If you're a shop tuning multiple trucks, or an owner building a serious performance diesel, EFI Live is the most capable platform available. It's not a beginner tool — expect a learning curve.
